Columbus Town Council decided last week to make an offer on a piece of property for sale adjacent to Veteran&squo;s Park.
Town council discussed the proposed purchase of 0.21 acres at the corner of Ward and Peak streets during a closed session meeting last Thursday. When council returned to open session, members approved making an offer on the property.
The town has applied for a N.C. Parks and Recreation Trust Fund grant to help with a planned project to purchase the lot and construct a shelter.
The shelter would be used for concerts and events on the concrete slab already located at Veteran&squo;s Park.
The land was previously for sale for $100,000, but council agreed that price was too high for the town&39;s budget and agreed to make a lower offer.
The cost to build the shelter is estimated at $30,000 with engineering and other costs estimated at approximately $15,000.
