Wolfe&squo;s 800-meter time of 1:55.04 at last month&squo;s Taco Bell Classic was the third-fastest time posted by any North Carolina runner this year. He is the defending state champion in that event.
Maggie Conner, also a junior at Polk, was a finalist for the 1A/2A Female Olympic Sport Athlete of the Year. Although she did not win, she was the recipient of the Bob Waters Award, which goes to the finalist with the highest grade point average. Conner has a GPA of 4.50.
This is the second consecutive Male Athlete of the Year Award for Polk County, as field athlete Regis Bittle won last season.
The banquet, which honors top athletes in both college and high school, was held in Asheville at the Grove Park Inn.
Wolfe was also named the 2009 Western Highlands Conference track MVP after winning the 800- and 1600-meter runs at Wednesday&squo;s conference finals at PCHS.
Conner was the runner-up for 2009 conference MVP on the women&squo;s side after her victories in the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles. She also took second in the High Jump.
