After completing a bachelor&squo;s degree in biology from the University of Tennessee, she returned to New Jersey, where she taught at the elementary and high school levels until her retirement in 1984. She was a devoted teacher and strong believer in the value of education.&bsp; Jean and her husband, Ken, moved to Tryon&bsp; in 1987, where she became very active in the community including the Tryon Swim Club, the Tryon Garden Club (especially Pearson&squo;s Falls), the Tryon Film Society, and volunteering at St. Luke&squo;s Hospital.
