A native of Newport, Tenn., he was the son of the late Joseph Alexander and Martha Jane Green Smith and widower of Bertha Mae Thomas Smith.

He is survived by three sons, Tommy Smith of Saluda, Curtis Smith of Greenwood and Charles Smith Jr. of Lyman; two daughters, Pearl Shelton of Mill Spring and Doris Metcalf of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a brother, Glen Smith of Jonesville, S.C.; a sister, Mamie Spencer of Pacolet, S.C.; 14 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Ray Smith, and two grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Sunday, May 3 at Mountain Page Baptist Church.
