Columbus hearing Thursday on water/sewer billing for renters

Published 4:04 pm Tuesday, December 16, 2008

Columbus Town Counil plans to hold a public hearing regarding a proposed change to the town&squo;s water and sewer billing policy for renters.

The town is considering requiring landlords to pay for water and sewer utility bills for all customers.

This would result in only one deposit being required for all rental property. Owners would have their name on rental accounts once the current tenant moves out.

The town would no longer allow renters to apply for service. Arrangements to pay for water and sewer usage could be incorporated in rents or arrangements would be between the landlord and tenant and not the town.

The town has experienced a loss in revenue of $3,500 in the previous eight months. Prior to this, the loss was $9,900 for a period of more than four years.

If adopted, notices will go out to landlords of record and this will be advertised in the local media. Anyone with questions can contact Donna Butler at 894-8236.

The hearing will be held on December 18 at Columbus Town Hall.
