Three weeks ago, the Cardinals were 0-7. Two weeks later, Landrum is now in the hunt for the region championship.
For the second straight week, the Cardinals got a region victory. This time, Landrum beat Blacksburg 22-7.
Leading up to game time, Landrum head coach Russell Mahaffey said that one of the keys to the game was going to be involving Riley Parsons in the passing game. That plan didnt happen on Saturday night as the Cardinals didnt complete a pass.
But thats not to say that Parsons wasnt a playmaker for Landrum. Instead, his impact came on special teams. In the first quarter, he ran a punt back 95 yards for the games first score.
Blacksburg scored its only touchdown in the first quarter and entered halftime with a 7-6 lead.
In the third quarter, Brandon Cannon ran the ball in from five yards for a touchdown.
In the fourth quarter, Landrum kicker Jimbo Martin kicked an 18-yard field goal and then added the extra point after Tyler Burrell punched in a touchdown from one-yard out.
Cannon ran the ball 22 times for 142 yards. Burrell had 17 carries for 62 yards.
While the Cardinal win was big, even bigger was that Christ Church beat Whitmire. Whitmire was undefeated, including a win over Landrum.
The Whitmire loss and Landrum win, places the Cardinals destiny firmly in their own hands. A win over Christ Church this Friday at home would put Landrum in the region championship picture. The Cardinals and Cavaliers face off at 7:30 p.m.
