The center opened last Monday. Its hours are Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. until noon. An attendant will be onsite during those times.
Columbus&squo; recycling center is currently being manned by Ernie Kan of Re-Expressions, a non-profit recycling group based in Columbus. The town plans to hire an employee for part-time work with interviews beginning this week. Kan will most likely be stationed there for about a month, until an employee is selected.
The town is contracting with GDS, which will haul the bins, and the town is aiming to get return revenue from its sale of the recyclables.
Columbus will accept #1 and #2 plastics, clear, brown, green and blue glass and aluminum and steel cans. The town also accepts&bsp; newspapers, magazines and cardboards, with all items in separate compartments.
The town in recent years ceased curbside recycling because it said the costs were too high and interest from residents was too low.
Volunteers from Re-Expressions recently conducted a Saturday paper drive and residents have been asking the town to provide some type of recycling opportunities.
