‘Extreme weather event’ hits Thermal Belt

Water gushed over the spillway at the Lake Lanier dam this week after the remnants of Tropical Storm Fay brought nearly seven inches of rain in a 48-hour period. Tryon Water Plant Supervisor Betty Jones said it was the about most water she&39;s seen flowing over the dam. Water has not been flowing over the dam for much of the summer due to an exceptional drought. According to town measurements, the area received 5.46 inches of rain between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. Wednesday, which Jones said was enough to be classified as an &uot;extreme weather event.&uot;&bsp;
