The Town of Tryon has amended some of its ordinances to allow the Tryon Presbyterian Church to construct a parking lot.

The parking lot is adjacent to the church on Harmon Field Road.

Tryon Town Council met Tuesday and held a public hearing prior to approving two text amendments. One text amendment was to give the town planning board authority to grant approval to remove more than the current limit of 900 cubic yards of earth for residential purposes and 1,500 cubic yards of earth for commercial uses if no reasonable alternative exists.

Tryon Presbyterian Church is proposing to move 20,000 cubic yards of earth to construct the parking lot.

The Tryon Planning Board met yesterday to consider approving the church&squo;s parking lot site plan.

Another text amendment approved by council was to allow the planning board to increase the number of parking spaces allowed as it currently has only the authority to decrease the number of parking spaces required.

The town plans to rewrite the excavation section of the ordinance to better fit the town&squo;s needs.
