A Saluda home was completely destroyed last week when it caught fire in the middle of the night.

The Saluda Fire and Rescue Department was dispatched to 90 West Fork Creek Road at 3:57 a.m. last Monday.

Deputy Chief Zach Pace says Saluda was first on the scene, but the house was fully engulfed and was already a total loss when firefighters arrived.

Pace says the homeowners tried to call emergency crews but couldn&squo;t from their home and tried to contain the fire with a water hose. The homeowners walked to a neighbor&squo;s house to make the call to 911.

Last Monday morning many trees were down and there were power outages in the area because of high winds. One mutual aid department had to cut down trees blocking the road to make it to the fire, according to fire officials.

Saluda Fire and Rescue was assisted by fire departments from Tryon, Columbus, Blue Ridge and Green River.

The fire is still under investigation, officials say.
