A Polk County deputy was airlifted to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an accident Friday morning that occurred while he was responding to a breaking and entering call in Green Creek..

At approximately 8:30 a.m. Friday the Polk County Sheriff&39;s Office was dispatched to the&bsp; reported breaking and entering in progress in the Green Creek area.&bsp; Patrol Sergeant Andrew Durham, along with deputies Gary Cox and Nancy McKaig responded on the call.

Deputy Gary Cox, while traveling on Chesnee Highway lost control of his patrol vehicle and traveled into a field.&bsp; The rear end of the vehicle struck a tree and ruptured the gas tank.&bsp; Deputy Cox was knocked unconscious upon impact. &bsp;

Deputy Nancy McKaig stopped to assist Deputy Cox while Sergeant Durham continued on to the original call. &bsp;

Deputy Cox was entrapped in his vehicle and had to be extricated.&bsp; The Green Creek Fire Department, Polk County EMS, Polk County Rescue Squad responded to the scene.

Deputy Cox was extricated from the vehicle and airlifted by Regional One to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Deputy Cox was evaluated at Spartanburg Regional Friday morning but details about his condition were not available.

Deputy Cox was driving a 2001 Ford Crown Victoria.&bsp; The North Carolina Highway Patrol is handling the investigation of the accident.&bsp; Deputy Cox has been an employee of the Polk County Sheriff&39;s Office for four years.

The Polk County Sheriff&squo;s Office says it will issue updates&bsp; from SRMC on Deputy Cox&39;s condition as they are received.
