Polk County High School rising senior Brianna Richardson recently attended a 10-day National Youth Leadership Forum on Advanced Medicine and Health Care at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md.

Richardson was recommended for the program by George Mason University, which nominates students who have shown exceptional academic achievement as well as leadership. She hopes to pursue a career in health care and felt the Advanced Medicine and Health Care forum would provide valuable experience toward that goal.

“I love the fact that this forum includes many hands-on procedures like suturing and fracture reduction,” Richardson said. “I love that it’s held at Johns Hopkins University, which is on my list of potential medical schools and since it’s ranked one of the best in the nation, I was honored to be invited there to participate in this medical forum.”

Students lived on the Johns Hopkins campus during the 10-day NYLF Advanced Medicine Health Care program.

“This is an excellent opportunity for students to explore a broad range of educational pathways and accompanying careers in health care,” said Jan A. Sikorsky, Ph.D., Vice President of Education for Envision and NYLF Advanced Medicine Health Care. “Our students gain a critical advantage, which includes getting inside information on the challenges of medical school and being a leading practitioner in the ever-changing health care environment.”

As part of the program, students are confronted with real-world medical challenges, including a simulated patient encounter at a medical training facility. Students learn the science and art of creating an optimal plan of care for patients, get hands-on experience in suturing and fracture reduction workshops through Envision’s partnership with the Apprentice Doctor group and use the Oculus Rift virtual reality system to “perform” a life-saving procedure.
