Polk County Commissioners will discuss the future of its jail on Monday, Oct. 20.

The board set a workshop for 6:15 p.m. in the commissioner meeting room of the Womack Building in Columbus. The workshop will be prior to the county’s regular meeting, which begins at 7 p.m.

Polk County’s Jail was built in the 1960s and has had issues with annual inspections because of its age. The county jail is often full with the sheriff’s office housing inmates in other counties because of its small capacity. Polk’s jail also is not equipped to house female inmates, all of which are housed in other counties.

Commissioners decided at its Oct. 6 meeting to plan the workshop for a discussion about the jail and its future.
