Ray Christopher to speak at AAUW Sept. 22

At the AAUW meeting on Monday, Sept. 22, 2014, Dr. Ray Christopher will offer a presentation on the origin of western North Carolina’s mountains.

He will discuss the cataclysmic events that resulted in the formation of the Appalachian Mountains.

Dr. Christopher has conducted extensive research on the geology of the Carolinas and he is currently involved in a project on the geology of the Carolina Coastal Plain as a volunteer with the U.S. Geological Survey.

Dr. Christopher received his Ph.D. in geology from Louisiana University. He spent his professional career in academia, teaching at Auburn and Clemson Universities; in government service as a research geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey; and industry where he held a number of technical and managerial positions with Atlantic Richfield Company.  Clemson University, from which he retired, awarded Dr. Christopher the Award for Excellence for Teaching in the Sciences.

AAUW, (American Association of University Women), is a nationwide network of university women whose mission is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.

The Tryon Branch of AAUW will meet Monday, Sept. 22 at 1:30 p.m. at the Tryon Presbyterian Fellowship Hall. The meeting is open to the public.

Refreshments will be served.
