At the Sept. 16 meeting of the Foothills Fire District held at the Depot in Landrum, board members voted unanimously to create a special purpose district (SPD), as put forth in a proposal by Landrum’s Fire Chief, Warren Ashmore. Two public meetings were held August 12 and 19 for public input before the vote.

Board members are Gerald Fox, David Murphy, Pam Hilsman, Hugh Hursey, and Chairman Richard Locke.

The SPD will include the Landrum Fire Department’s current coverage area of the city of Landrum and the area surrounding the city, plus an estimated two square mile area south of Lake Lanier in Greenville County that includes portions of the 29356 area code. This area in Greenville County has been covered by the Landrum Fire Department under contract since the early 1990s, according to Ashmore.
