Water bill follies

To the editor:

The article in the Tryon Daily Bulletin dated Sept. 2, 2014 entitled “Tryon to aggressively go after delinquent utility bills” caught my attention as a person who moved from Tryon this year to Green Creek.

As I paid a bill in person with the Town of Tryon, I notified the clerk taking the bill that I would be moving and provided the date for my move and also a forwarding address which I watched her type into a computer.  Before I had the chance to move there was a leak in my water tank and I again had to visit the Town of Tryon water department.  Again, I talked with another clerk about moving and she said she did not have my change of address.  I told her I watched a lady type in the change during my previous visit and it was explained to me that one screen would save changes made, but another would not in their computer system.  Again, I watched as the changes were made at my request.

After moving and never receiving a bill or a refund of deposit, I called the Town of Tryon Water Department.  I made at least two calls before finalizing my water bill business with the Town of Tryon.

I provided notification of move initially in Jan. 2014, moved Jan. 25, and received final bill/refund the end of April.

Now, I only moved to Green Creek so this was something I could stay on top of here locally and resolve though it took several attempts.  I would speculate that others moving out of the area might not go to the lengths I had to just to resolve a water bill.  If it took me this much effort, I would also wonder how many folks never receive their refund.  We always read about how the Town is being taken advantage of, but what about the people who live in it?

In light of my personal situation, I would recommend The Town Of Tryon either perfect the system they currently use of get a new one for dealing with address changes and people who move with respect to billing.
