At Landrum’s Sept. 9 City Council meeting, Police Chief Tim Edgens announced the department’s launch of an automated telephone reassurance system for residents of Landrum.

Named Are You OK?, the system is designed to check on the elderly, latch-key children, people without family, the home bound and the disabled, by making a phone call to the residence at a predetermined time every day.

The individual is prompted to push a number when asked if they are ok. If they don’t push that number, or if they don’t answer the phone two calls in a row, the system will print an alert for a police officer who will then go to the residence to make a welfare check.

Edgens encourages city residents to come to the police department to complete the necessary information forms. He added that the system can ease the concerns of friends and family who want the reassurance that their loved ones’ safety and well-being is monitored.
