VFW Post 10349 donates second US flag to White Oak of Tryon
The Womack – Bradley VFW Post 10349 has donated its second flag to White Oak of Tryon, to be flown in front of the new addition to the facility, which was completed recently. Johnny Taylor Post 10349 quartermaster said, “this is one of many things that we can do to support our veterans and many of them live right here at White Oak. We donated a flag to White Oak several years ago and it was taken down and properly disposed of by the Post when the construction began last year. At that time we promised that we would replace the old flag when the construction was completed.”
In 2003 the Tryon and Mill Spring posts consolidated to form the Womack-Bradley VFW Post 10349in Mill Spring. The Post has around 60 members and 30 Auxiliary members both of whom are very active in Mill Spring, Columbus, Saluda and Tryon.
Some of the programs which are sponsored annually by Post 10349 are Cancer Aid and Research, assistance for homeless female veterans, Outreach Ministries, working with Service Dogs for Vets, flag education for elementary school children, Hospice Support through Volunteers, Meals for veterans and their families, and many more. Every year in June, the Voice of Democracy Scholarship is awarded to a deserving high school senior and in May the Ladies Auxiliary presents the Law Enforcement Officer of the Year, which in 2015 went to Polk County Sheriff, Donald Hill.
Quartermaster for Post 10349 said, “We welcome all who are Veterans of Foreign Wars. We meet on the second Monday of each month at the Mill Spring Post where we discuss our current and future projects and the items we feel are important to our Veterans past and present.” “ The Auxiliary also meets on on the second Monday of each month and has it’s own projects to plan and fulfill,” said president Tita Hyde. We encourage wives and female relatives of Veterans of Foreign Wars to join us.”
“Contrary to popular belief, the Post is not a social club that just appeals to older men telling war stories. We are a serious group of men and women who have very important roles to play in the lives of our veterans, their families and in our community. We encourage everyone who has served our country in a foreign outpost to join with us in making a difference in the lives of those who have served our country,” said Quartermaster Taylor.
