Tryon Painters & Sculptors will open their second exhibit of 2016 on Saturday March 5. On display will be works by guest artists and members of the organization. A reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. with light refreshments available. Guest artists include Mary Walker, Gary Page, and Jim Cullen, and member artists are Lindsay Moore, Harriet Spencer, Melanie Archer and William Dill.

Mary Walker, a Tryon native, is a painter and print maker who studied painting at the Art Students League with Isaac Soyer. Her stunning new watercolor monoprints embellished with silhouettes of black oil-based ink are elegantly mystic. Accolades include Showcase Artist, Print Club of New York, and Residency at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica di Venezia, Venice Italy. Collections of her work are held across the southern states.

Gary Page, watercolorist studied art with Karl Lohse in the 60s, attended the Art School of Westport Connecticut in the 70s, and is reminiscent of Andrew Wyeth in choice of color and subject matter. His works reflect on themes of rural Southern life, and are rendered with depth and detail. He has won many awards and has a following of collectors across the U.S. and in Canada.

Jim Cullen’s work as a potter began in 1976 after he retired from filmmaking. He currently works as a potter and pottery instructor. His exquisite pots reflect a spiritual quality, and in his own words, “the making of pots is a form of meditation.” He also plays guitar and believes that the two go hand-in-hand. His range of experience includes a degree in design, numerous classes, workshops, and conferences across Illinois, Colorado, Kentucky, New York, and North and South Carolina, as well as work as a pottery instructor in several states.

Member artists’ work includes Lindsay Moore’s thought-provoking studies in figure drawing, Harriet Spencer’s moving watercolors, elegant glasswork by Melanie Archer, and captivating acrylics by William Dill.

The Walker, Page & Cullen show will continue through April 16 at the Tryon Painters and Sculptors Gallery at 78 N. Trade Street in downtown Tryon. Gallery hours are Thursday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition, you can visit the Gift Gallery featuring the works of over 50 local and regional artists.
