In 2015 and again most recently on March 23, Foothills Humane Society was awarded a grant from Polk County Community Partners for this year’s summer intern program. The grant pays for a qualifying student to perform critical duties during an eight-week time span.

Believing it is important to support efforts of students seeking experience in a specific workplace and outside their normal family life, Chris Taylor, executive director, is pleased to announce receipt of this grant. Chris says, “It is pertinent for staff to play an active leadership role and the Student Intern Program offers that opportunity.”

The contribution of such students to the shelter is invaluable. Four current staff members were a part of the intern program including the 2015 summer intern who qualified upon receipt of that year’s grant. Intern duties will not be restricted to kennel care but include support of office staff, informing clients of food assistance, spay/neuter and vaccination programs available to those who qualify as well as covering phone duties or assisting the in house vet tech.

Should the next intern not become a permanent staff member, FHS is proud to offer them a leg up into their future work place. The experience gained increases student awareness of the need for outside assistance with pets by citizens in the community pressed beyond their resources due to hardship.

Cruelty cases only increase a student’s compassion and often their networking has resulted in an rise in shelter adoption numbers.
