TRYON – Franklin Delano McKaig, 90, of Tryon, passed away Saturday morning, February 1, 2025, at Upstate Community Hospice House in Landrum.
Born in Polk County, he was the son of the late James Bryant McKaig and Kate Ross McKaig and husband of the late Sadie Hudson McKaig who passed away in 2024. Franklin was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. Following his service to his country, he earned his teaching degree from the University of Houston. He began his teaching career in El Campo, Texas, and returned to Tryon in 1965 to teach at Tryon High School.
Franklin had a passion for his students in Tryon, having served as the Vocational Director,and golf coach and he finished his career at Tryon High School as principal from 1979 until Tryon City Schools merged with Polk County Schools. He was a founding member of the Tryon Youth Center for which we helped raise money every year, was known as the “Pizza Maker” and a member of the Tryon County Club. Franklin was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Tryon where he and his wife, Sadie, served in many capacities, such as deacon, over the years. He was the last surviving member of his siblings.
Surviving is one son, Eric McKaig (Rochelle) of Boiling Springs, South Carolina; one daughter, Leah McKaig of Hendersonville, North Carolina; two granddaughters, Kasey McKaig of Radford, Virginia and Madison McKaig of Christiansburg, Virginia; one adopted great-grandson, Gabriel.
A celebration of Franklin’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 8, 2025, at First Baptist Church of Tryon with Dr. Jeff Harris officiating.
A reception will follow the service in the Gathering Space of First Baptist Church of Tryon.
