Let’s get “reel”—TV shows and movies are the ultimate escape. Whether you’re binging the hottest new series or rewatching a favorite classic for the hundredth time, there’s just something magical about getting lost in a good story on the screen. Here are my favorites that were released last year. These are all available to check out on DVD at the library!
Lisa Frankenstein
In this horror comedy, a misunderstood teenager and a reanimated Victorian corpse embark on a murderous journey together to find love, happiness, and a few missing body parts.
Twisters
Haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado, Kate gets lured back to the open plains to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. She soon crosses paths with Tyler, a charming but reckless social media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures.
True Detective: Night Country
In the fourth season of the anthology crime series, two detectives in Alaska are tasked with investigating the mysterious disappearance of eight scientists at a research station.
Challengers
Tashi, a tennis player turned coach, has transformed her husband from a mediocre player into a world-famous grand slam champion. To jolt him out of his recent losing streak, she makes him play a challenger event — close to the lowest level of tournament on the pro tour. Tensions soon run high when he finds himself standing across the net from the once-promising, now burnt-out Patrick, his former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend.
Wicked
Misunderstood because of her green skin, a young woman named Elphaba forges an unlikely but profound friendship with Glinda, a student with an unflinching desire for popularity. Following an encounter with the Wizard of Oz, their relationship soon reaches a crossroad as their lives begin to take very different paths. (The DVD release date is in February, so place your hold now!)
Hacks
A dark mentorship forms between Deborah Vance, a legendary Las Vegas comic, and an entitled, outcast 25-year-old comedy writer. Season three was released in 2024, but unfortunately only the first season is currently available on DVD. It’s still worth a watch!
