TRYON—Tryon Arts & Crafts School will host an engaging lecture by art historian, curator, and TACS board member Dr. Lili Corbus, titled “Women Photographers in Tryon, 1900 to 1950.” This event will take place on Thursday, September 19, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in TACS’ gallery, with complimentary refreshments provided.

Dr. Corbus first delivered this lecture last spring for the Tales of Tryon series. It highlights her research on pioneering women photographers who documented the people and landscapes of Tryon and its surroundings during the early to mid-20th century, including Margaret Morley, Frances Benjamin Johnston, Bayard Wootten, and Hansel Mieth.

In addition, after her presentation, Corbus will lead a walk-through of the current gallery exhibition that she co-curated (with TACS Director Will Barclift), Bayard Wootten, Light and Air: Photographs of Tryon, the Western Carolinas, and Beyond. Wootten’s works are on loan from the North Carolina Collection of UNC Chapel Hill’s Wilson Library. Dr. Corbus’s research into Wootten, including her article titled “Photographer Bayard Wootten in 1930s Appalachia,” published in The Southern Quarterly: A Journal of Arts in the South (University of Southern Mississippi), and her interviews with Wootten’s niece, will offer attendees unique insights.
