Columbus– Robert Marion Underwood, 84, of Columbus, passed away, Monday morning, May 8, 2023 at Smith Phayer Hospice House in Landrum.

Born in Tryon, he was the son of the late John L. Underwood and Ilean Newman Underwood. Mr. Underwood proudly served in the United States Army. After his service, he began working in the automotive business having operated several service stations, Gulf Station in Landrum, Shell Station in Columbus and opened Landrum Lube and Carwash in Landrum. He was a jack of all trades, being able to work on cars, woodworking and anything he could get his hands on. Mr. Underwood was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Grady Underwood, Leon Underwood, Jerry Underwood and Lewis Underwood.

Surviving is his wife of 53 years, Rachel Owens Underwood; one son, Derek Underwood of Tryon; two grandsons, Chase Underwood which is deployed with the United States Marine Corps. and Briar Underwood; one great-granddaughter, Evelyn Ann Underwood; one sister, Frances Waldrop of Columbus.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening, May 11, 2023 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the McFarland Funeral Chapel.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday in Polk Memorial Gardens with Reverend Steve Underwood and Reverend Brian Wilson officiating.

Military honors will be conducted by the Polk County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard.
