R-S Central’s girls and Brevard’s boys earned team titles at Wednesday’s Mountain Foothills 7 Conference Track and Field Championships.

But the real winner of the day? The wind that gusted and roared over J. Alan Peoples Track all afternoon long.

Those breezes played havoc with anything loose, turned over the water table provided in the infield for athletes and often provided an unexpected force to battle during races. That didn’t prevent Polk County athletes, though, from scoring numerous conference titles in their final home appearance of the season.

The Wolverine boys placed second in the team standings, just 13 points behind Brevard. The Polk girls scored a third-place finish, trailing R-S Central and Brevard.

Polk seniors Nathaniel Rhein and Kris Littlejohn led the Wolverines, with Rhein winning both the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles and Littlejohn taking both the long jump and high jump. Rhein was named the top track athlete at the meet while Littlejohn was named both the top field athlete as well as the Most Valuable Player of the meet.

Polk’s Nathaniel Martinez held off Brevard’s Parker Sisney to win the 400-meter dash, defeating Sisney by .09 seconds. Polk’s boys 4×800-meter relay team also emerged a winner, finishing almost 12 seconds ahead of Brevard.

The Wolverine girls produced two conference champions, with Mia Bradley clearing 4-8 to win the high jump and Leah Dotson sailing 7-6 to win the pole vault.

R-S Central’s Alana Warren was named the top field athlete while teammate Brooke Hope was chosen the top track athlete. Brevard’s Shaniya Cook was named the girls MVP.
