Scholarship initiated by Polk County Community Foundation

FOOTHILLS–On March 28, the Leah Justice Journalism Scholarship was initiated by the Polk County Community Foundation after it received an anonymous donation for the scholarship. 

The scholarship will be available to a graduating high school senior in Polk County or the surrounding area, including Landrum, who is interested in the field of journalism. 

A student who is looking to major in journalism and who has demonstrated talent in writing, photography, videography or other journalistic media may apply for the scholarship. Academic records, teacher recommendations, internships completed and financial need may be taken into consideration, with a potential career in journalism being the driving factor for award consideration.

“Our community is incredibly fortunate to have so many local donors who have established generous and creative scholarship funds,” says Sara Bell, President of the Polk County Community Foundation. “Year after year, these donors create opportunities for any student to pursue their unique educational goals and attend a wide variety of post-secondary programs and institutions, regardless of their financial circumstances.”

Leah Justice was an award-winning reporter with a long career in journalism. After earning a degree in journalism at Clemson University, she went on to become a well-respected journalist with the Tryon Daily Bulletin for over 20 years. Justice passed away in January of this year.

“The Leah Justice Journalism Scholarship will further cement Leah’s legacy as a pillar in the community,” says Jeff Allison, General Manager of Tryon Newsmedia, LLC. “Leah was an extraordinary talent, and this scholarship will help aspiring journalists use their talents to keep this important work going strong for years to come.”
