TRACK AND FIELD: Polk squads finish seventh against tough WHKP field

West Henderson dominated Thursday’s 2023 WHKP Invitational track and field meet, winning both the boys and girls divisions at North Henderson.

The annual meet attracted many of the area’s top programs, including Polk County. The Wolverines placed seventh in both the girls and boys team standings.

West’s girls scored 158.5 points to top A.C. Reynolds (115.5) and Pisgah (95). The Falcon boys finished with 150 points to lead A.C. Reynolds (135) and T.C. Roberson (73).

Avia Cunningham had the top showing for any Wolverine, placing third in the discus with a throw of 83-9. Blake Anderson took fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:13.01 while the Polk 4×800-meter relay team of Anderson, Cade Bright, Nathaniel Martinez and Jalyn Thomas grabbed second with a time of 8:54.49.

Polk County is scheduled to host its final home meet of the regular season on Saturday, the J. Alan Peoples Invitational. The meet will include a naming ceremony dedicating the track in Peoples’ honor.
