Free event set for April 4 at Columbus Library

 

COLUMBUS–Area residents who love a good puzzle and are looking to challenge their brains in a fun and friendly environment will have an opportunity to do so next month.

On Tuesday, April 4, Polk County Public Libraries will be hosting ‘Cryptogram Word Puzzles” at the Columbus Library, giving folks a chance to solve cryptograms with Dan Dworkin.

Cryptograms are similar to card games and crossword puzzles. Completing cryptograms helps keep the mind sharp and teaches perseverance, according to Dworkin.

“Solving cryptograms is valuable for us older heads whose memory and deductive reasoning abilities decrease as we age,” Dworkin said. “There are advantages for the elderly in particular, and for anyone who enjoys solving puzzles.”

A cryptogram is a type of puzzle that consists of a short piece of encrypted text in which a cipher is used to recover the original lettering. Originally, these ciphers were used for real encryption of military or personal secrets.
