The learning process continued Wednesday for Polk County.

The Wolverines, starting four freshmen and a sophomore, saw a senior-laden Chase squad do almost everything right in recording a 14-2 victory in a Mountain Foothills 7 Conference matchup at The Bottoms.

Chase (7-2, 3-0) earned its second win in as many nights over the Wolverines thanks in large part to another solid pitching effort – senior Hank Bright allowed four hits, struck out 12 and didn’t walk a batter in six innings of work.

In the two games with Polk this week, Chase didn’t walk a batter and had just one error.

The Wolverines (3-6, 0-3), meanwhile, had their second 10-error game of the season, that reflected in the fact that three Polk pitchers combined to allow just three earned runs.

Polk County cut an early Chase 2-0 lead in half in the first inning as Gunnar Alm delivered his first varsity home run, a high fly ball just inside the foul pole in right field.

The Trojans responded with two unearned runs in the second and continued to build the advantage, taking a 7-1 edge before Polk pushed across a run in the fourth. Lawson Carter singled to open the inning, stole second, then scored on Karson Scruggs’ sharp line drive to left.

The Trojans responded with two runs in the fifth, then tallied five times in the seventh following a two-out Polk error.

Alm, Carter, Scruggs and Bryson Jones had Polk County’s four hits.

Freshman Noah Harden took the loss, allowing four hits with a strikeout and two earned runs in 3 2/3 innings. Freshmen Alex Perry and Alm pitched the final 3 1/3 innings, giving up four hits, striking out three and allowing seven runs, though just one earned.

Polk County will return to action on Tuesday, traveling to Hendersonville for another conference clash.
