Gowan’s gem carries Chase past Polk in conference opener

Chase senior Jackson Gowan held Polk County to two hits Tuesday, setting the stage for the Trojans’ 10-0 victory in the teams’ Mountain Foothills 7 Conference opener in Forest City.

 

Gowan’s effort helped the Trojans improve to 5-2 overall, 1-0 in league play. Polk County dropped to 3-4, 0-1.

How it happened: Gowan threw just 63 pitches in the five-inning game, striking out 10 without a walk.

 

Chase put together a five-run first inning to give Gowan the support he needed, that rally highlighted by Mason White’s two-run double. The Trojans added two runs in the second inning on Iziah Baynard’s two-run homer, two in the fourth and one in the bottom of the fifth to end the game by run rule.

 

At the plate: Gunnar Alm and Avery Hensley had the lone base hits for Polk County as Gowan faced just two batters over the minimum in five innings.

 

On the mound: Cohen Edwards took the loss for Polk, striking out four, allowing eight hits and nine runs in four innings. Karson Scruggs pitched the bottom of the fifth, facing three batters.

 

Next up: A schedule change means that Chase will visit Polk County on Wednesday. Junior varsity game will begin at 4 p.m. with varsity to follow around 6:30 p.m.
