SALUDA–Did you know that Carl Sandburg was a hobo? Did you know that Saluda was the cradle of pediatrics? Did you know that the Saluda Grade is the steepest standard-grade mainline railroad in the country? Did you know that one of Saluda’s famous sons was singer and entertainer, Perry Como? Did you know that the railroad through Saluda was built by convicts, or that the railroad first arrived in Saluda in 1878—a full year before it was extended to Hendersonville? And let us not forget the Ghost Train! All these things and more you can learn at the Saluda Historic Depot and Museum which will reopen for the 2023 season on Saturday, April 1.  

The depot closes each year following the Christmas Holidays to clean, update and install displays significant to the history of the Saluda Grade railroad and the history of the town of Saluda.

The depot, built in 1903, will celebrate its 120th anniversary this year and is an area landmark. Saluda Historic Depot and Museum welcomes all visitors and tour groups to the depot and  reminds everyone that admission is free for all visitors.

All are invited to visit the historic depot and learn more about the “Secrets of Saluda.” Depot opening hours are Thursday through Saturday noon until 4 p.m. and Sundays 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.
