Board addresses new road name, census appeal, changes to farmers markets and transportation plan

POLK COUNTY–The Polk County Board of Commissioners held a meeting on March 6 at the R. Jay Foster Hall of Justice at 5 p.m.

Several motions were approved, including the naming of a road, a plan regarding internet availability, the submission of a census count review and changes to Polk County Farmers Markets. 

Alpine South Drive was approved as the name for a private road off SR-1004 in Green Creek.

The board also approved a Digital Inclusion Plan presented by Izzy Norton of the Foothills Regional Commission regarding broadband internet availability and quality in Polk County.

Also, a demonstration of the LUCAS (The Lund University Cardiopulmonary Assist System) chest compression system was added at the request of Commissioner David Moore. The demonstration was performed by EMS Director Michael Crater. The LUCAS chest compression system is an automated CPR apparatus employed by Polk County EMS.

Planning/Economic Development Director Cathy Ruth presented concerns regarding the 2021 census count. The housing count dropped from the last census, which signified an error. An increase in population is expected after the count review that is to be sent to the US Census Bureau, which would increase federal funding to the area. The motion to approve the report and send the request to the US Census Bureau was approved.

Lastly, the board approved scheduling of a public hearing to consider the proposed Comprehensive Transportation Plan (CTP), in which the board will hear the public’s opinion on the prioritization of roads in Polk county that need improvement or have safety concerns. The CTP hearing will take place Monday, March 20 at 5 p.m. in the R. Jay Foster Hall of Justice in the Womack building.
