TACS brings renowned artists and educators Judy Harrington, Joan Phillips, and Jennifer Joy Walkovich to Tryon for a jam-packed weekend in which students will rotate among the three artists’ classrooms. The intensive educational experience will be accented with artist demonstrations, social engagements, and opportunities for the artists to mingle in the town of Tryon.

Judy Harrington grew up outside of Niagara Falls in Western New York and now resides in Greenville, South Carolina. Harrington has 30 years of teaching experience and has instructed art full-time at Sterling School & Charles Townes Center since 2018.

Harrington’s practice incorporates heat transfer systems using sublimation paper to transfer original imagery to silk screens.

Joan Phillips is originally from Philadelphia. She is presently the Director of The City of Clemson Arts Center and was previously the Executive Director of San Jose’s Bay Area Glass Institute. Her studio practice combines photography, printmaking, and glass. Phillips holds a BFA in Photography from The University of the Arts and an MPS in Arts and Cultural Management from Pratt Institute.

Phillips will teach how to create and assemble a multilayered glass collage. Students will create their own part sheets and experiment with screen printing, photo decals, and glass emulsions.

Jennifer Joy Walkovich is a glass artist and traveling educator based in Tucson, Arizona. Walkovich’s professional training as a color consultant is an asset to her personal practice and her students’ learning experience. Her designs are strongly influenced by geometry, requiring precision with measurements and cuts.

Walkovich will provide an overview in creating optical illusions with glass by using innovative cutting techniques.

FuseFest is supported by Oceanside Glass & Tile and the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources with Tryon Fine Arts Center acting as its local agency. Additional national and regional sponsors include Slumpy’s and Kakilaki Studio Arts. Local sponsors include GreenLife Inn at the Mimosa and Tryon Coffeehouse Co-Op.
