Ninth-inning outburst powers Polk past Rosman

Polk County exploded for six runs in the ninth inning Wednesday, the outburst sealing a 10-4 victory in a non-conference softball matchup at Rosman.

The Wolverines improved to 2-0 with the extra-inning victory. Rosman dropped to 0-2.

How it happened: Polk County trailed 4-3 entering its final at-bat in regulation, but Sarah Vitale’s one-out triple and Amberlyn Scruggs’ RBI single evened the score and set the stage for extra innings.

Scruggs started the ninth-inning rally with a one-out single, followed by base hits by Elizabeth Vitale, Katelyn Arrowood, Laney Littlefield and Kayleigh Wilson.

Freshman Junie Mitchell ripped a two-run homer and Miya Jackson scored later in the inning to give Polk its six-run lead.

At the plate: Sarah Vitale finished 3-for-6 with a triple, home run and two RBI, with Scruggs going 3-for-5. Mitchell was 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBI, Arrowood was 2-for-5 with two RBI, Jackson was 2-for-5 with an RBI and Wilson finished 2-for-5.

Littlefield was 1-for-5 with two RBI and Mia Bradley finished 1-for-4 as Polk County hammered out 18 hits in the win.

Sarah Vitale earned the win in relief, pitching 5 2/3 innings and allowing one run. Kynley Lawter started and pitched 3 1/3 innings, giving up three runs.

Polk County is scheduled to travel Friday to East Henderson for a 5 p.m. matchup.
