Warmer weather brought athletes from nine schools to Polk County on Wednesday for the Polar Bear 3 indoor track and field meet in G.M. Tennant Stadium.

 

The Polk County boys placed third in the team competition, the Wolverines’ 75 points just behind R-S Central’s 77. West Henderson won the boys division with 96 points.

 

West Henderson and R-S Central also finished 1-2 in the girls chase, with Brevard in third and Polk County taking fourth.

 

Polk’s Nathaniel Rhein had the lone individual event win of the day for the Wolverines, soaring 40-6 to win the triple jump. Rhein broke the 40-foot mark for the first time in the event and his jump is the fifth longest in the state this season for 2A/1A athletes.

 

Rhein also placed second in the 55-meter hurdles.

 

Polk’s 4×800-meter relay team topped West Henderson by more than 40 seconds to win that race while the 4×400-relay team finished second. Polk’s Kole Powell and Bryson Owen finished second and third in the shot put, with Cannon Iamurri grabbing second in the triple jump and Kristopher Brooks claiming second in the pole vault.

 

Polk’s girls team had a trio of third-place finishes, those from Maggie McCammon in the high jump, Elizabeth Vitale in the pole vault and Lindsey Dotson in the shot put.

 

The Wolverine teams are set to next be in action on Saturday, Jan. 28, hosting the WNC Polar Bear Championships.
