Dr. Boals received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis TN, followed by an internship and general surgery requirements at Methodist Hospital in Memphis. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the Campbell Clinic in Memphis, a prestigious honor because only two residents were chosen each year and was the most desirable place for orthopedic surgeons to train. From 1965-1972, he served in the United States Army Reserves as a major in the Army Reserve Medical Command Unit.

Dr. Boals held Board certifications from the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners. Professional memberships among others included American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Tennessee Medical Association, and Tennessee State Orthopedic Society. Dr. Boals was a previous chair of the Regional Committee

for Admissions for the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He was in private practice from 1968 to 2005.

In 2005 upon retirement, Dr. Boals and his wife Denise moved to Tryon, NC, first residing in the historic Blockhouse where numerous charities hosted events. He served the Tryon Community through his involvement in the Rotary Club, was a member of the Board of St. Luke’s Hospital Foundation, and was the vice-president of the Tryon Fine Arts Center. As a member of the Tryon Country Club, Dr. Boals played in numerous golf tournaments supporting local charities.

Family and friends will remember Joe as one in a million, an extraordinary man. He is survived by his wife Denise; children Dr. Joe Boals, Bob Boals, Anne Leigh Winstead, Mike Boals, and Allison Boals. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and a brother, Dr. James Boals, and a sister, Margaret Montgomery.

His greatest passions were golf, gardening, friends, family, animals and helping those in need.

A celebration of life will be planned and announced later this year.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Church Health Center of Memphis, TN at 1350 Concourse Ave., Suite 142, Memphis, TN 38104 or to a charity of your choice.
