Owner, Chef Eloise Garcia, who also owns Cafe La Gaule in Tryon, named the restaurant Marengo due to its relation to a French commander. Marengo was the name of the commander’s horse, and one of his favorite post-victory meals was veal marengo.

Born in Spain, Garcia started working in the restaurant business at a young age and has spent her career working mainly in Spanish and French restaurants. She created Marengo to showcase her passions and background, and has built a strong team to represent those passions, including expert sommelier, Benjamin, and noted chef, G.G.

“With the tapas, we’re bringing a little bit of our European home to our Tryon home,” Garcia said. “We make Spanish and French food with our own twist, don’t copy anyone, and our food is made with true love and serious passion.”

The menu features the classic French-American breakfast and brunch that locals have come to expect from Cafe La Gaule, and the tapas menu showcases Spanish cuisine that can be eaten as a meal or an appetizer. The menu will have a weekly special and feature calamari, pescaditos, croquetas, mussels, and escargot. Marengo also serves wines from around the world, while Cafe La Gaule serves primarily French wines.

Of course, Marengo also offers burgers. Its beef, bison, or salmon burgers are served with fries. The restaurant locally sources as much of their produce as possible and is always looking to work with local farmers.

“We wanted to do a restaurant that was fun, where someone can come have a good time and just sit and enjoy their food and wine, not thinking about work and worrying about their day,” Garcia says. “All while enjoying trying new things like the octopus or different tapas.”

Marengo is open from 8 a.m to 9:30 p.m Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. It will serve breakfast from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m and brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m, with tapas available from 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
