Columbus– Eleanore “Ellie” Vollman (née Hoffmann), 93, returned to her heavenly home on December 16, 2022, after a long, full life. She passed away peacefully at her home in Columbus, N.C. surrounded by family and friends. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, loyal friend and neighbor, and a faithful member of her church.

Eleanore was born on April 18, 1929, in Brooklyn, N.Y. She moved at the age of six with her family to Islip, N.Y. where she later married Joseph Schumann and raised her six sons in “The White House”. She stayed in close touch with her school friends via the “Glee Club Pals” for many years. She worked as a secretary for more than 15 years and supported the visually impaired by learning and creating Braille text by hand. In addition to her own children, she sponsored two foster daughters and was a sponsor in the “Fresh Air Fund”- a program designed to provide inner city kids an outdoor summer experience.

Eleanore demonstrated great strength when she became a single parent following the loss of Joseph, and her eldest son, Eric, within a short time frame. She became an involved member of Trinity Lutheran Church Islip where she later met and married Ron Jantzen, who blended perfectly with Eleanore’s extended family of children and grandchildren.

She and Ron relocated to North Carolina in 1990 where they were embraced by a loving community and lived together until his passing in 2008. Here she adopted the southern version of Eleanore and became “Ellie”. She once again found support in her church, Trinity Lutheran Church in Tryon, where several years later after Ron’s passing, she wed Bill Vollman.

Throughout her life, Eleanore enjoyed several personal hobbies, particularly writing and puzzles. Up until the age of 93, she never lost her wicked sense of humor and loved to play practical jokes on her family and friends.

Eleanore is survived by her husband, Bill Vollman; her five sons, Kurt (Ann Marie) Schumann, Christian (Beth) Schumann, Paul Schumann, Peter (Mary) Schumann, and David (Julia) Schumann; her eleven grandchildren, with three great-grandchildren and a fourth on the way. She also leaves behind her sister, Carole Williams, and six nieces and nephew. She is predeceased by her second husband, Ronald Jantzen (Dec. 2008), her first husband Joseph Schumann (Dec. 1973), and her son Eric (Dec. 1975).

Funeral services are planned for 11 am January 21, 2023, at Trinity Lutheran Church Tryon officiated by Pastor Olson.

While she will be missed by so many, we are thankful that she will be reunited this Christmas with the loved ones that she has lost. Even in illness she continuously expressed how thankful she was for her long life, family, and friends and was a model of a positive attitude for us all.
