The 2022-2023 Farmer’s Almanac predicts that winter temperatures in upstate South Carolina and western North Carolina will be colder than normal, even saying that temperatures could be record-breaking in some cases.

The Almanac says that precipitation and snowfall will be above normal between Pennsylvania and western N.C., with the snowiest periods between mid-to-late January and early February. Upstate S.C., the Almanac predicts, will experience above-normal snowfall during late January and early February.

“Freezing temperatures will also bring above-average snow totals to most areas in the US that typically experience snowfall,” according to the Almanac.

The Farmer’s Almanac is known for its reliable predictions and trustworthy calculations, but its forecast differs drastically from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) idea of North Carolina’s winter.

NOAA says that temperatures in Upstate SC and Western NC will experience up to 40% above average warmer temperatures with a 40% below average chance of wintry precipitation.

Drier-than-average conditions, NOAA informs, are expected throughout much of the southeast portion of the country.

Whether hoping for a cold and snowy winter or a warm and mild one, the Foothills might have a shot at both.

As of press time, some forecasts are predicting a 40% chance of snowy weather in our area this Friday, with high temperatures in the 40s and low temperatures below 20 during the weekend leading up to Christmas. Christmas Day is expected to be sunny and cold.
