Vitale sisters compete in South Carolina USTA tourney

Polk County’s Sarah and Elizabeth Vitale took part in the Lexington County Tennis Complex Winter Chill tennis tourney held Dec. 2-4 in Lexington, S.C.

Competing in the 16 and under division in the United States Tennis Association event, the Wolverine duo opened play on Dec. 3 in doubles with an 8-4 win over Maggie Secoy and Bailey Rowe of Lexington. That moved them into the semifinals, where they dropped an 8-0 decision to Lily Sloan of Johns Island, S.C. and Mary Coleman Head of Gilbert, S.C., the top seed in the field.

The Vitale sisters also competed in singles, with Elizabeth Vitale dropping a first-round match to Agnes Juell Shinn of Charlotte, the eventual tourney champion, and Sarah Vitale falling to Lorraine Loney of Augusta, Ga.
