Campobello– It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of William Stuart Pound Jr., affectionately known to all who knew him as Bill or Billy.  He was preceded in death by his father William Stuart Pound, his mother Barbara Pound Goldberg, and stepfather Sy Goldberg.

Bill was born in Youngstown Ohio on July 6, 1953.  At the age of 13 months, prior to the arrival of the Salk Vaccine, he tragically contracted Polio and encephalitis, an event that would alter the course of his life.  As a child, he and his parents were actively involved with the Easter Seal Center in Youngstown and he later attended the Grafton School in Berryville, Virginia. Upon their arrival in Tryon, NC Billy returned from Grafton to live with Barbara and Sy Goldberg on their farm on Hunting Country Road where he resided for much of his life.  Following his mother’s death in 2007 he lived with his sister Madelon.

A passionate beekeeper and fisherman, Billy was happiest working outdoors. For 25 years he was a beloved member of the team at Fairview Farms, where he took great pride in his roles filling the water buckets of future champion thoroughbreds and manning the controls of the hot walker.  Along with his mother, Barbara, he was a long-time volunteer with the Tryon Riding and Hunt Club, especially at the Blockhouse Races, and in more recent years Bill was a regular volunteer at FENCE and the Hospice Resale Barn in Landrum.

In all his endeavors, be they large or small, Billy sought to make a meaningful contribution with his life and found immense satisfaction in being given responsibilities and delivering a job well done.  He never stopped working to improve his reading, writing, and mathematical skills and he loved working in the yard.  Despite the lifelong challenges he faced as a result of his childhood illness, Bill was a man of great positivity and joy.    Bill never knew a stranger.  He will be remembered for the genuine smile he always wore on his face, and how he relished a good joke and a hearty laugh.   Not only was he a perpetually kind human being, but Billy also recognized and valued kindness in others and he truly cherished how many members of this community he considered his friends.

He is survived by his sister Madelon P Wallace, his niece Megan Wallace Rubens and her husband William Rubens, and their daughters Scarlet and Zelda.  A service of remembrance will be held on Saturday, November 19^th, 2022 at 11:00 AM at the Jackson Grove United Methodist Church, 2842 North Pacolet Road, Landrum.  Due to the high level of flu-like illnesses circulating at present, the family encourages all in attendance to bring a mask.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorial contributions would be made to the Anthony E. Wallace Scholarship Fund at Polk County Community Foundation – 255 South Trade Street, Tryon, NC 28782 or FENCE – 3381 Hunting Country Road, Tryon NC 28782.
