Tryon welcomes new Director of Development

On Tuesday, November 8 the Tryon Downtown Development Association held a reception at the Tryon Depot to welcome a new economic development professional.

Michelle Newman began her role as Director of Development on October 31. In this position, Newman will manage the Tryon Downtown Development Association (TDDA) and the town Main Street Program, and assist with the town’s larger economic development goals and projects. Newman will spearhead a downtown revitalization program that utilizes historic preservation as an integral foundation for downtown economic development.

A Tryon resident, Newman has a background in marketing and public relations with a focus on tourism and arts promotion. She most recently worked as the communications manager for Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, and has worked for Tryon Fine Arts Center and Henderson County Tourism Development Authority. As a volunteer, she has been involved with the Shakespeare & Friends theater company, Polk County Senior Games and SilverArts, and Tryon Tourism Development Authority.

“Everyone in Tryon is excited to have Michelle back in town,” said Wanda May, longtime Tryon resident and Main Street advocate. “Michelle brings an exceptional skill set to this position and we all anticipate moving Tryon forward with much success.”

The Tryon Downtown Development Association is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit agency and certified North Carolina Main Street business development and historic preservation program. The TDDA works under the supervision of the Town of Tryon to achieve goals related to community development, event planning, and economic development.
