Some favorite recollections of fall involve long rambles through big woods; leaves underneath, laid upon a spongy carpet of long-past autumns; scents of moss, oak, decaying wood, and damp earth—a most-pleasing mix. 

Then there were crisp Saturday afternoons of raking, raking, raking endless heaps of leaves. No leaf blower back then–we kids were IT. Up, up, we’d rake and pile multi-hued leaves, until a towering mountain beckoned. JUMP! 

And…we did—JUMP!…surrounded head-to-toe in a nest of leaves. It was magical – sprawling out on a deep bed of leaves, peering up through etched branches into bright-blue distance…faint jet trails vanishing above a red hawk drifting to parts unknown.  

Saluda Winter Market is at Saluda Center, 64 Greenville Street, on 2nd and 4th Saturdays from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. through April with area vendors bringing produce, eggs, meats, baked goods, and handcrafted items. Support SCLT with donations, volunteering, and Amazon Smile. Contact “Trail Boss” Chuck Hearon at chearon1942@gmail.com about hike info, leading a hike, or helping clear trails. Volunteers are needed to help with landscape and trail work at Henry’s Nature Center (HNC). SCLT’s annual holiday boxwood wreath-making day will be at Twin Lakes on November 26 from 11-3.
