Tryon Concert Association will present a special musical event by concert handbell choir, The Raleigh Ringers. This concert will take place on Sunday, November 13, at 3 p.m. in the Polk County High School Auditorium.

This renowned group of musicians, under the direction of David M. Harris, is acclaimed for presenting unique, “dazzling,” and “joyous” performances (Chatauqua Institution). Some audience members have been “spiritually transformed” (John Lambert) by this ensemble, dubbed “a true North Carolina Treasure” (David Briggs). The ensemble offers sacred music as well as popular, rock, and original compositions written specifically for them.

The ensemble travels extensively, bringing its music to audiences across the United States and in Canada, France, and England. They have appeared on nationally syndicated radio shows, including the “Bob and Tom Show” and the “Hour of Power.” The Raleigh Ringers has released seven albums and two full-length holiday concert videos, the latter having been aired on many PBS stations.

Using a total of 377 instruments ranging over many octaves, The Raleigh Ringers performs on one of the largest collections of bells and bell-like instruments in the world. Each set of instruments has its own sound, and mixing the type of instruments in any performance allows the musicians to create “create contrasting moods and highlight melodic lines” (The Raleigh Ringers). Members of the ensemble are selected by auditions, which occur every year, ensuring the finest possible ringers.

The Raleigh Ringers is noted for promoting the art of handbell ringing through outreach programs such as supporting handbell choirs in the Raleigh area and providing educational opportunities through classes and sponsorship of events. The ensemble sponsors annual handbell festivals for young musicians as well as adults. The City of Raleigh honored the group with its “Medal of Arts” award for making extraordinary contributions to the arts community.

This event promises to be special. The Raleigh Ringers is known for giving extraordinary performances that engage and wow audiences. This concert will be a revelation to those who have not yet heard bell choirs and a joy to those already familiar with the instruments.
