Wood carvers and crafters from around the area gathered Saturday from 10 to 3 p.m. for the Wood Carvers, Whittlers, & Wood Crafters Festival hosted by Discover Columbus.

The well-attended event featured numerous vendors selling various handmade pieces ranging from bowls made of exotic wood,to musical instruments and toys for all ages. There was even a toolbox carved from the wing of an old spruce airplane. The festival is usually held outdoors since its beginning as part of the Columbus Day Festival but was moved indoors due to weather concerns. And while Cole Lumbus Sr., the town’s wood-carved mascot perched on the front lawn couldn’t oversee the show, Cole Lumbus Jr., a smaller identical sculpture, took its place.

Nathan Smith of Libertas Woodworks in Tryon was one of the many wood crafters. His unique cutting boards and other creations included a handcrafted American flag mounted in a Walnut Frame. David Sheppard of Columbus showcased his work, individual faces carved into the fallen branches of local trees.

Craftswoman Ernie Kan, a Discover Columbus committee member and regular at the Farmers Market, sold her many wood-carved items while encouraging adults and children to take turns learning to whittle themselves using bars of soap. Bob Child of Ugly Boy Flutes sold his handmade flutes while showcasing his flute playing skills during the event’s setup.

Robert Williamson, a vendor with a vast array of creations and member of the Discover Columbus committee, pointed out, “All of the woodworkers here are hobbyists and represent the local woodworking community, all from within 30 miles of Columbus. They all come here to sell their work and see what others are working on.”

Discover Columbus committee Rosalie Rogers helped inform attendees, and fellow committee member Jimmi Buell helped organize the event.
