Volunteers are needed for the Tryon Half Marathon that is set for Saturday, November 12.

 

If you are a fan of foot races, or just enjoy supporting the community and a good cause, the Tryon Half Marathon is in search of helpers and volunteers. The volunteers are needed on Friday, November 11, for registration and to hand out information to the racers and then for numerous jobs on Saturday, the day of the race, ranging from handing out water to handing out the medals. 

 

Race Director Katheryn Gordon said, “This half-marathon would not go on without our volunteers. They are critical to the success of the event. We are looking for volunteers for everything, from helping Friday, to serving the Saturday breakfast, helping with safety, and clean-up. We especially need water stops and course monitors.”

 

Anyone applying will receive an email explaining their duties and then will be expected to check in with the race coordinator first. The event also allows folks to volunteer in multiple capacities if the timing does not interfere.

 

The Saturday schedule will start with a breakfast at the Harmon Field log cabin, and there are opportunities to sign up to both serve and donate breakfast items. The other key positions open are to run the numerous water stations and course monitors who keep the racers on course by manning the intersections or confusing spots.

 

The course is also considered a great one for first-timers and those who are looking for a nice flat run. The race begins and ends at Harmon Field, and follows Hwy. 108 to  Lynn Post Office and right onto Clarence Rhodes Road, then to Scriven Road, and down River Road. Eventually, there will be a turnaround to follow the course back to 108 and onto Howard Gap, where runners will enter Harmon Field on the trail by the tomato field, finally finishing on the track.

 

Katheryn adds, “The half-marathon is in its ninth year and would be our tenth if not for Covid, with all proceeds going to Thermal Belt Outreach Ministries, who help to serve thousands of families in the community. The race was not always an Outreach event, but is now.”
