Columbus – James Carroll Horne, 84, passed away on September 11, 2022 at Tryon Estates in Columbus, NC. Jim was born on January 26, 1938.  He was the eldest son of Max M. Horne and Beatrice (Pat) Edwards Horne.  He was married to Elaine Boryk Horne, his loving wife for 43 years.

Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Imogene Bell Horne, his brother Phillip Larry Horne and his sister, Myrtle Sandra Ryan.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Elaine, are his brothers, Donald and Ronald Horne; his daughter Kim Horne; his son Mike (Yvonne) Horne; grandchildren: Brittany (Nick) Miller, Jackie (Alex) Papalios, Sarah Horne (Kevin Hubbs), Jordan Horne, Sabrina (Joe) Slaton and Eric (Ashley) Moore. Great grandchildren: Arianna, Skylar, Alayna, Elijah, Landon, AJ, Chase, Adilynn, Brentlee, Madelyn, Olivia and Kai.

Jim took advantage of educational opportunities throughout his life. He has a BS degree from Syracuse University in Industrial Management, a master’s degree from Air Force Institute of Technology in Logistics Management, a master’s from Wright State University in Industrial Personnel Management, and a PhD in counseling psychology from Southeastern University.

Jim retired as a Captain in the Air Force after 22 years of service. One of his last assignments was Procurement Officer for the B-1 bomber avionics program. After retiring from the Air Force, Jim worked for several high technology companies in Atlanta, GA where he negotiated multi-million-dollar contracts around the world. Between Air Force tours, corporate negotiations

and personal travel, Jim visited over 70 countries.

Throughout his life, in addition to traveling and cooking, Jim enjoyed meeting people and making friends in many places, especially in his favorite neighborhood coffee houses. He would listen to music of all kinds, and often say “I love the music, the music all people make.” He was a poet and published a collection of his poetry, “Seasons in the Sun.” He also authored a 500-page genealogy book entitled “Hornes-A-Plenty: The Saga of John Micager Ananais Horn Clan in the South Eastern United States,” which traced the family history back to 1710, and highlighted several personal stories from the Horne family relatives about their own lives and the people they loved. In his own loving family tribe, Jim enjoyed watching his

children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow.

A memorial service will be held on September 17, 2022 at 1 p.m. at the Mill Creek Church, Tryon, NC. A Celebration of Life reception will follow.
