Third annual memorial stair climb at clock tower on Sunday morning

 

TRYON––In remembrance of the 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, community members will be honoring those who lost their lives 21 years ago with their third annual stair climb.

On Sunday, members of the community will be at the clock tower in downtown Tryon honoring those who passed away while attempting to save lives.

On September 11, 2001, 343 firefighters climbed up to 1,980 stairs in the World Trade Center. The stairs by the clock tower in Tryon represent the 110 stories of the WTC. The stair climb is open to the public, and those who participate will climb up and down the stairs 66 times to equate to 1,980 stairs, honoring those 343 fallen firefighters. 

According to Patrick Corn at Tryon Fire Department, around 20 people show up at the clock tower for the stair climb.

“It’s an opportunity for people to honor those who died. Those people––some of them made it to the eighty-eighth floor before they perished. We never want to forget that sacrifice they made. It’s a way for the public to connect with those people,” Corn says.

The stair climb will begin at 8 o’clock on Sunday morning, rain or shine.
