Days are getting shorter, and I’m turning into my parents

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

‘If you can hold all the pain of the world in your heart, but never forget the vastness of the great Eastern sun, then you can make a proper cup of tea.’ ~ Chögyam Trungpa Rimpoche

This is almost pathetic to admit, Dear Reader, but Monday evening I turned on the 6:30 evening news, poured a glass of wine, rustled up supper ingredients—sat down with wine in hand, and settled in to see what was going on in the world (that’s why I had wine in hand) before cooking.

Nora O’Donnell was nowhere to be seen, and for a couple of minutes, I was just scratching my head over why the evening news was late, of all things.

Just one glitch with all this–I was an hour early, folks. The days really are getting shorter, and if the evening’s cloudy, my inner time clock is yelling for dinner earlier, obviously!

So, back up I got, turned the TV off, and went forth to chop, dice, and cook, wine in hand, just like Julia Child would have done–figuring by the time 6:30 p.m. and Nora arrived, I’d be finished with dinner and ready to call it a night. I’m turning into my parents.

Saluda Tailgate Market is every Friday at the west city parking lot located off Main Street, 4:30-6 p.m.

This summer’s final Top of the Grade Summer Concert is August 26 with Peggy Ratusz & Friends on the Ella Grace Mintz stage at McCreery Park (if it rains, the concert will be at the park pavilion) from 7-9 p.m. Bring a chair; coolers are welcome; local restaurants open. The Top of the Grade Concerts are thanks to a community grant from Polk County Community Foundation and are coordinated by the Saluda Downtown Foundation and the City of Saluda.

Saluda Elementary School opens on August 29., along with the rest of Polk County Schools.

Need to make a joyful sound or two? Join the new community chorus “Mountain Song.” Rehearsals start September 12, 6:30-8 p.m. at Saluda Center, 64 Greenville Street. This is “a joyful choir bringing people together to sing show tunes, pop songs, spirituals, classics and vocal jazz.” Visit www.MountainSong.info for information.

Saluda’s Sympathy goes to Sheila Billeter for the loss of her husband, Steve. I don’t think I ever saw Steve without a smile or a sparkle in his blue eyes – and over the years, I watched his beloved old blue-and-white Ford Bronco become a classic. He will be missed!
