Items that are tax exempt include school supplies, backpacks, clothing and accessories, shoes, computers, printers, and certain bed and bath items. These tax-free items can be new or used and are eligible regardless of price.

South Carolina Department of Revenue defines school supplies as items used in the classroom or at home for school assignments, including, but not limited to, pens, pencils, paper, binders, notebooks, books, backpacks, lunchboxes, and calculators.

Smartphones, digital cameras, cosmetics, jewelry, eyewear, wallets, watches, refrigerators, and toiletries will not be tax-free during the Sales Tax Holiday.

As long as an item is eligible, it is tax-free whether purchased in-store or online.

North Carolina suspended its tax-free holiday after 2013.
